First Words
I remember waiting anxiously for my son’s first words. He picked up one or two and from there it seemed to snowball. He is now 2 years and 1 month old and he never stops talking. Ever.
I had lunch with a friend the other day who has a daughter who will be 2 in February and she’s got another who is about six months old. The older daughter is refusing to speak since baby sister was born. She clearly understands everything they say and will respond (with nodding or head shaking) but she won’t talk. The doc says it is likely a jealously/regression issue that will correct itself with a little time.
Although I can see the frustration of have an almost 2-year old that doesn’t talk I was thinking the other day there has got to be some happy medium. As I was trying to brush my son’s teeth while he was having a conversation with me I thought - “someone has got to have a kid somewhere that knows when to talk.”
Maybe not. Perhaps all parents fight through tooth brushing while the little one is talking up a storm. Yesterday I caught him pushing the button on the answering machine to have a conversation with the old messages. It talked, he talked, and they both seemed content to repeat the same conversation over and over. I think I’ll market an answering machine for parents who are too tired to converse at the end of a long day. I’m betting I could make some serious cash.
